This is why I do it...

I just got home from one of the longest days ever: headed to work around 7:45, taught all day, had to deal with class pictures (getting 23 6-year-olds to all stand still and smile at the same time is damn near impossible), 2 meetings, Back to School night with parents until 8:00 and then Book Club. Needless to say, I'm exhausted....possibly too exhausted to fall asleep, which is why I'm blogging.

Every year, after the first couple weeks of school we do a Back to School night where parents come and you talk to them about your classroom procedures, curriculum, etc. It's funny, because my first two years of teaching, I remember getting so nervous that I would almost throw up. Now, I don't really get nervous, though it's a very LONG stressful day. Basically from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM I had to be totally "on" today. I showed my smiley teacher face to my kids all day then turned around and showed it to their parents (during two different 45 minute sessions).

As exhausting and stressful as this whole ordeal is, tonight I actually felt like it was worth it. I had three different parents come up to me tonight and say that their child didn't really like school last year and that they would often come home crying or complaining about something....and that this year, they come home so excited to talk about their day. Hearing that kind of gave me the extra push to get through the last few hours of my long day. I'm not by any means happy to hear that these kids had a bad year in kindergarten, but it's nice to hear that they "LOVE first grade and LOVE Mrs. Asher". This is why I do it.
